1868. godine osnovano je Narodno pozorište u Beogradu. Plafone je svojim monumentalnim stilom oslikao ruski slikar Stepan Kolesnikov. Jedino što je u enterijeru ostalo od prethodne zgrade je luster Narodnog pozorišta u Beogradu i medaljon sa likom kneza Mihaila, iznad portala pozornice, koji je uradio vajar Đoka Jovanović. Rad vajara Đoke Jovanovića. Prvi put je izlagao na Pariskom salonu i Svetskoj izložbi u Parizu 1889, tada je dobio bronzanu medalju. Dobio je zlatnu medalju na Svetskoj izložbi 1900. godine u Parizu. Samostalno je izlagao prvi put u Novom Sadu 1905, a potom često u Beogradu.Pripada prvoj generaciji srpskih vajara čije delovanje ima pionirski karakter. Uradio je veliki broj bista i skulptura, ali i medalja, plaketa. Od njegovih radova najpoznatiji su: Spomenik Josifu Pančiću (1891) u Univerzitetskom parku u Beogradu; spomenik knezu Milošu Obrenoviću (1898) u Požarevcu; spomenik Kosovskim junacima (1910) u Kruševcu; Crnogorac na straži (1903) u pariskoj opštini; spomenik Branku Radičeviću (1899) u Sremskim Karlovcima; spomenik vojvodi Mišiću (1921); Spomenik Vuku Karadžiću (1929) u Beogradu; spomenik vojvodi Stepi Stepanoviću (1930), luster Narodnog pozorišta u Beogradu i medaljon sa likom kneza Mihaila etc. Izabran je za redovnog člana Srpske kraljevske akademije 16. februara 1920.
