Paja Jovanović, jedan od najvećih srpskih slikara, rođen je u Vršcu 16. juna 1859. godine kao najstariji sin Stefana Jovanovića, trgovca i fotografa, i Ernestine Deot iz Temišvara.Završio je Slikarsku akademiju u Beču, u klasi profesora Kristiana Gripenkerla. Boravio je jedno vreme u Minhenu, Parizu, Španiji, Italiji, Švajcarskoj, zatim na Kavkazu, u Carigradu i Egiptu, Americi. Od 1900. godine uglavnom radi u Parizu i Beču. Posle Prvog svetskog rata boravio je duže vremena u Beogradu i Bukureštu. Izlagao je na slikarskim izložbama u Parizu, Beču, Berlinu, Londonu i Rimu. Na Svetskoj izložbi u Parizu 1900. dobio je zlatnu medalju za sliku „Krunisanje cara Dušana“. Iste godine odlikovan je Ordenom Belog orla V reda.Jedan od najboljih slikara svih vremena je u svom životu dugom 98 godina naslikao neverovatan broj slika, a gotovo svaka se može nazvati remek-delom. Oslikavao je običan balkanski narod i njegove običaje, ali i ugledne ljude čiji portreti odišu gospodstvenošću. Te dve strane svoje ličnosti je umeo da pomiri Paja Jovanović. Bio je i veliki gospodin i čovek iz naroda pa je umeo da predstavi ono najbolje iz oba načina života. Radio je istorijske kompozicije , kompozicije sa motivima iz narodnog života Srbije, Crne Gore i Albanije. Osim ikonostasa Saborne crkve u Novom Sadu, istorijske kompozicije iz života Nemanjića za Saborni hram u Sremskim Karlovcima, radio je ikonostas Male Crkve u Dolovu. Naslikao je prvi potret cara Franca Jozefa u Šenbrunu.Umro je u Beču 30. novembra 1957. godine. Po njegovoj želji, urna sa posmrtnim ostacima preneta je u Beograd.
