Od sredine 19. veka, bar što se tiče Kneževine Srbije, bilo je očevidno da je vreme starih balkanskih graditelja, mahom s juga Balkana, neumitno prošlo. Na Zapadu školovani inženjeri i arhitekti preneli su u Srbiju vladajuće stilove savremene Evrope. Otuda, do pojave secesije preovlađuju i na ovom području tzv. istorijski stilova, neorenesansa, neobarok, a vidljive su i pojave koje upućuju i na stvaranje srpskog nacionalnog stila.
Glavni zastupnici ovakvih težnji bili su Slovak Jan Nevole, Aleksandra Bugarski, Andrija Vuković, Kosta Šretlović, Kosa A. Jovanović, Jovan Ilkić i Svetozar Ivačković. Probuđeni istorijom, u srpskoj arhitekturi nadmoćno vladaju sve do pojave nove generacije naših arhitekata, čije se ideje već vezuju za secesiju. I u njenoj pojavi, čiji su glavni predstavnici Branko Tanazević i Nikola Nestorović, očituju se težnje ka pronalaženju i izvornih srpskih arhitektonskih pouka.
