Dečje predstave na internetu Štrumpfovi, koji su se prvi put pojavili u belgijskom stripu pre više od 60 godina, postali su planetarno poznati u crtanim filmovima prikazanim širom sveta , koje obožavaju sve generacije. 1958. godine prvi su put svetlo dana ugledali Štrumpfovi. Izmislio ih je jedan Belgijanac – crtač stripova Pjer Kulifor – poznatiji pod umetničkim imenom Pejo. On je u to doba crtao stripove za belgijski magazin „Spirou“.Ideja za reč Štrumf došla je Peju kad je jednom prilikom ručao na belgijskoj obali s kolegom i prijateljem Andreom Frankinom. Prilikom jela Pejo je želeo da zamoli prijatelja da mu doda so, ali nije se mogao setiti reči za solir. Stoga je rekao: „Passe-moi… le schtroumpf!“ („Dodaj mi… Štrumpf!“).Prijatelj mu je dodao solir i u šali rekao: „Evo ti Štrumpf, a kad završiš sa štrumpfivanjem, vrati mi Štrumpf!“ Ostatak toga vikenda njih dvojica su navodno proveli šaleći se sa reči Štrumpf i njenim izvedenicama (npr. štrumpfovati, štrumpfastično itd.) i tako su nastali Štrumpfovi. Danas, nakon šezdeset godina Štrumpfovi su i dalje omiljeni crtani likovi dece ali i odraslih. Procenjuje se da je prodato oko 25.000.000 stripova o njima na 25 jezika, a snimljeno je i dosta filmova.
